Over the years, I've worked in many different areas of the law. Of all legal practice areas, the work I enjoy most is defending against debt collection efforts and and protecting people against unlawful collection practices. The reason is that it's one of the few areas where a lawyer can not only make clients happy, but exceed their expectations. Sometimes, being a lawyer is little more than "mop up" duty. The damage is already done and the lawyers are just there to help with the clean-up. It can also involve high stakes and place attorneys and their clients under enormous stress. There's nothing fun about debt, but it's something most people have to deal with on a regular basis. Defending debt collection is simple and straightforward. It's only about money. I make money by helping people save money. No one has to go to prison. No lives or families are going to be lost or destroyed. That said, debt collection can still be intimidating. In most cases, it's a David and Goliath match-up between a "Big Bank" and the "Little Guy." There are few things better than telling clients I got rid of their debt and they don't have to worry about it anymore. It's true that when you're doing something you enjoy, you never have to "work."
