About Owen McGowan

I founded McGowan & Associates in 2001 after serving as a name partner at another prominent Boston-based law firm. Throughout my career, I have tried over 400 cases to verdict. (Ask any other lawyer you are considering how many verdicts they have taken.) These cases have ranged from premises liability and environmental claims to catastrophic personal injury cases and multi-million dollar fire losses. I have also extensively lectured and published on defending environmental claims, including topics such as lead poisoning, sick building and indoor air quality claims, the rights of burn victims, carbon monoxide poisoning, and animal attacks. Recent results include a $2.75M medical malpractice award in 2023 and a $6.85M verdict for a seriously injured motorcyclist in Plymouth Superior Court. Over 50 lawyers turned down the motorcyclist’s case before my office got involved. My litigation experience has led to frequent requests from fellow attorneys to act as an arbitrator or mediator in resolving challenging disputes. Additionally, I have been retained multiple times as a witness in complex legal matters, offering my insights to insureds and their insurers and on issues such as standard of care in litigation, proper claim handling, and bad faith evaluations. For instance, I was engaged as a witness concerning alleged legal malpractice in the largest patent infringement case ever decided in Western Massachusetts. Furthermore, the Federal District Court of Virginia qualified me as a witness to assess injuries in a multi-million dollar toxic tort action involving lead poisoning. I have represented multiple plaintiffs in bad faith actions against their insurers. I regularly counsel businesses on litigation, insurance coverage, and strategic planning matters.
