Keith was born in Dallas and grew up in Connecticut. He lettered twice on the local varsity rugby team and was a radio disk-jockey. Keith attended Loras College (Iowa) on a scholarship, was a member of award-winning mock trial teams, and was named an All-American mediator; he wrote a conservative political column for his college newspaper and was an editor for a literary/scholarly publication. Keith also interned for a judge. Keith attended the University of Tulsa College of Law on scholarship and became an award winning advocate, delegate to the student bar, and a member of trial competition and moot court teams. He also clerked for several attorneys and a judge. After graduation, Keith became certified in family mediation by the Mediation Institute, passed the bar examination in Oklahoma, and then started his law practice at a Tulsa law office representing clients all over Eastern Oklahoma. Then he spent one year with the Tulsa County District Attorney's Office as a prosecutor under Steve Kunzweiler, during which time he worked on cases involving domestic violence, protective orders, and child welfare in both juvenile and district court.
